Gabri Kurtzer-Ellenbogen

Gabri is a student in the College of Arts and Sciences. She intends to double major in Urban Studies and Communication, driven towards the intersection of these two disciplines by her interest in understanding social movement theory and practice.

Gabri has spent six years in the Democratic campaign organizing space learning and growing to appreciate the art and science of mobilizing people around a shared goal. Inspired by some of the joys and frustrations she’s experienced in this space, she is drawn to explore the notion of “belonging” through the SNF Paideia program. Through learning about and practicing the process of dialogue, Gabri hopes to better understand what moves people to talk, act, vote, volunteer, and give in certain ways, and how communities – political, religious, interest-based, place-based, and more – can better empower people to reach across and through differences to foster individual and collective senses of belonging.

At the root of Gabri’s passions and activities lay her Jewish values. In this vein, Gabri has enjoyed spending her time at Penn thus far throwing herself into different opportunities for Jewish engagement and community. Beyond this, Gabri has gotten involved on campus in club gymnastics (having last practiced at the age of seven), Penn Programs for Religious, Interfaith, and Spiritual Matters (PRISM), Penn Leads the Vote, and a student volunteer network at the Children’s Hospital nearby.

Outside of academics and campus life, Gabri enjoys traveling, trying new vegetarian recipes (she is always open to recommendations!), learning new languages, and reading historical fiction novels about women’s espionage efforts during the first and second World Wars (a surprisingly robust genre!). She’s excited and grateful to be spending the next three years as a fellow building community with and alongside a diverse cohort of peers.
