Israel James

Israel is a student in the College of Arts and Sciences studying Earth and Environmental Science, focusing on climate science, energy systems, and environmental innovation. As a University Scholars Program participant in the Clean Energy Conversions Lab, he researches carbon capture and utilization, including extracting rare earth elements from coal fly ash and applying its alkalinity to ocean alkalinity enhancement for scalable carbon dioxide removal. Similar to this research, he is the founder of Terrabite, a startup developing sustainable construction materials from food waste.

He is also deeply interested in how science is communicated to the public. In a Paideia course project, he developed a theoretical museum exhibit in partnership with the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, using specimens to explore how climate change reshapes scientific classification and public understanding. His passion for dialogue-driven, civic engagement is rooted in his time as Chairperson of the State Youth Council of North Carolina, where he led youth initiatives and facilitated discussions on issues impacting communities across the state.

As an SNF Paideia Program Fellow, he is excited to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue that integrates wellness, ethics, and civic responsibility into complex societal challenges. He is particularly interested in how reflective dialogue can bridge the gap between scientific innovation and public values, shaping more thoughtful and equitable solutions. His Christian faith is central to his life and perspective, and at Penn he is actively involved in Every Nation Campus, where he continues to grow in community and spiritual development. He is also a member of Penn Climate Ventures, Penn Traditions, and enjoys collecting rocks.
