Kaovya  Vel

Kaovya  is studying Material Science Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Penn. She’s highly interested in energy and sustainability. Outside of school, she loves picking up random hobbies. Currently, she enjoys painting, playing basketball, and making short films.

Kaovya  became heavily involved in nonprofit work while in high school. She started and led a campaign with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society that raised over $100,000 to donate to blood cancer in just 14 weeks. As an avid tennis player, she became a Youth Ambassador for Recycleballs to make the sport more sustainable, starting an initiative in her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio that recycled more than 10,000 tennis balls. She also co-founded the Conversational Language Exchange Program (CLAX), organizing weekly meetings to give students in India a space to practice their English and her and her friends the chance to practice their Tamil.

Kaovya  enjoys attending random events hosted by the variety of organizations here at Penn. She serves as the Finance Chair for Operation Meal Forward, the Community Outreach Chair for Penn Beekeeping Club, and started a book club in Hill College House. Her interest in dialogue sparks from her love of traveling. She’s highly interested in community and the kind of common threads they form around. She plans to backpack the world one day and document all her adventures on Youtube. She is excited to become a part of the SNF Paideia community!
