Serafeim Kaznessis

Serafeim is a member of the SNF Paideia Fellows Class of 2029 from Minneapolis, Minnesota, studying bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Raised in a Greek and Cypriot household, he developed an early awareness of how cultural background shapes lived experience, identity, and perspectives on health and society. This foundation continues to inform both his academic trajectory and his engagement with questions at the intersection of science, society, and medicine.

Academically, Serafeim is interested in applying engineering principles to oncology, with a focus on translational research and the development of technologies that improve cancer treatment and diagnosis. He is particularly drawn to problems that require integrating quantitative methods within biological systems, and hopes to contribute to innovations that make advanced care more accessible across diverse global contexts. Accompanying his technical engagement, he maintains a strong interest in global health, healthcare access, and the role of cultural context in shaping patient outcomes and trust in medical systems.

As an SNF Paideia Fellow, Serafeim aims to deepen his ability to engage rigorously and thoughtfully across disciplinary and cultural boundaries. He is especially interested in fostering dialogue in complex or contested spaces, and in exploring how engineering, medicine, and the humanities can work together to address inequities in healthcare and improve systems of care at both local and global scales.
