Penn Summer Abroad Kenya

FilmAid Kenya is a film school based in two large refugee camps. For over twenty years, FilmAid has empowered its students to tell stories about their experiences, and their films often find a global audience on social media and through film festivals. They shape narratives about global migration. In this summer abroad course, students will collaborate with FilmAid Kenya to create an online version of its training program. During an intensive week of preparation at Penn, we will work with FilmAid staff and students as well as experts from Penn to develop a plan for bringing its curriculum online. We will then travel to the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya where we will work with the FilmAid staff and students to create the videos and other course material. Back at Penn, the material will be built into an open online course that can be accessed by thousands of refugees and others in at-risk communities. Penn Summer Abroad Kenya is supported by an SAS Making a Difference in Global Communities grant and is an SNF Paideia designated course. Note that the program fees for this course will be covered by a grant. Tuition fees still apply.
