The Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN) 2020 Virtual Convening, taking place November 12 and 13, will feature three dedicated sessions with PIT-focused undergraduate and graduate students.

Come and support them as we discuss how they combine their passion for technology and desire to make a difference in the world. Wherever they are on their journey, they — and we — believe that it’s time to focus on the needs of society and use their unique blend of policy and technology skills and knowledge.

Understanding technology and its implications is essential to creating a more just and equitable future. How do we ensure the public is better served by the design and implementation of policies and services which anticipate the implications of technology? How can we include the next generation of computer scientists, information architects, engineers, data scientists, and designers in policy making and public service?

SNF Paideia and Penn PIT-UN are members of the Public Interest Technology University Network, a partnership that unites 36 colleges and universities, working to address these very issues by building the nascent field of public interest technology and growing a new generation of civic-minded technologists.

Join us for the 2020 virtual convening of the Public Interest Tech University Network, along with partners from higher education, philanthropy, and public policy to discuss building the public interest technology sector; hear from leaders and scholars about addressing systemic inequality; and discover how you can use a career as a technologist for good.

This year, we are co-locating our Friday, November 13, events with IEEE’s International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS), the flagship conference of the IEEE’s Society on the Social Implications of Technology- the oldest society and conference of its kind.

Polarization and the Media in American Politics: A Conversation with Michael Smerconish

Polarization and the Media in American Politics: A Conversation with Michael Smerconish Michael Smerconish is one of the nation’s most visible media personalities, with a daily radio show on Sirius/XM and a Saturday CNN show. He also provides analysis on CNN for big events, writes columns and books, and more. Maybe most uniquely: Michael is one of the few voices in the media who can’t be pigeonholed ideologically. He’ll be fielding questions on what it’s like to be somewhere in the center in our increasingly ideological media, how the media shapes our politics, what we can do to build a media that better serves the public, and whether prominent figures should be blacklisted from the media if they can’t tell the truth. We’ll also cover the state of politics and whether our two party system is capable of representing Americans like him in 2023. Michael will also field questions from the audience.Learn More
